Power Outage 101:What To Do When The Lights Go Out

Here are some tips for what to do and what not to do in case of a power outage.

Safety Comes First:

• Only use a flashlight for emergency lighting. Never use candles!
• Keep fresh batteries in a battery-operated radio.
• Turn off any electrical equipment you were using when the power went out.
• Avoid opening your refrigerator and freezer.
• Listen to local radio for updated information.
• Leave one light turned on so you'll know when power is restored.
• Do not run a generator inside your home or garage.
• If you use a generator, connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator. Don't connect a generator to your home electrical system.

Think Ahead & Have On Hand:

• Flashlight(s). Due to risk of fire, don't use candles during a power outage.
• Portable radio.
• Batteries for flashlights and radio.
• At least one gallon of water.
• A small supply of food that doesn't require refrigeration.

Using a Generator:

If you don't already own a generator and are considering buying one, get advice from a certified electrical professional. Make sure the generator is listed with Underwriter's Laboratories or a similar organization. Some municipalities, Air Quality Districts, or states have "air quality permit" requirements. A certified electrician can provide more information. Always keep an operating generator outdoors -- never operate inside, including in your basement or garage.
